Communication & Consent
Introduces self and role, confirms patient identity
Explains procedure, risks (including vascular injury) and obtains consent
Checks allergies, medications (esp anticoagulants) and pain control
Preparation & Asepsis
Hand hygiene and appropriate PPE
Sets up sterile field and instruments
Marks site and ensures appropriate exposure/draping
Technical Steps (Safety-critical)
Provides adequate local anaesthesia and waits for effect
Performs needle aspiration with syringe immediately before incision to exclude vascular flow
Recognises pulsatile or arterial blood on aspiration and stops to escalate
Chooses safe incision site and makes appropriate incision (linear, dependent)
Breaks loculations and adequately drains cavity; obtains sample if indicated
Achieves haemostasis and inspects wound for ongoing bleeding
Packs cavity appropriately and applies dressing
Safety, Escalation & Documentation
Recognises when to escalate (pulsatile bleeding, suspected aneurysm, extensive cellulitis)
Documents findings, procedure, samples sent, and action taken (operation note)
Gives clear post-procedure instructions and timeframe for follow-up
